Founder
James Williams is a Portland-based disabled veteran, IT professional, and the founder of The Murk Audio LLC. With a background spanning military service, federal technology leadership, and a lifelong obsession with genre storytelling, James launched The Murk to build the kind of audio drama studio he always wanted to exist. He serves as Executive Producer on all Murk productions, overseeing creative direction, production strategy, and business operations.
Production Approach
Every Murk production is built around binaural 3D spatial audio — a recording and mixing technique that places sound in three-dimensional space around the listener. When experienced on headphones, binaural audio creates a sense of physical presence that standard stereo cannot replicate. The Murk's sound design philosophy follows a strict hierarchy: Dialogue First. Every ambience layer, every Foley choice, every SFX decision exists to serve the performance — never to compete with it.
The studio openly uses AI as a production and operations tool. Transparency about AI use is a professional standard, not a liability. AI assists with scripting, scheduling, and infrastructure — human artists perform, direct, and produce.
